Samaná requires careful planning. Based in Santa Bárbara or Las Terrenas, two days allow for an approach to its biodiversity. You must choose between the vastness of Los Haitises or seasonal whale watching (January-March), combining it with its beaches. We do not recommend turning this into a one-day round trip from Punta Cana. Choose a base in Santa Bárbara de Samaná, Las Galeras, or Las Terrenas depending on your visits; two days are not enough for the entire peninsula.
Day 1: one outing, not all
Choose Los Haitises with a guide and appropriate vessel to see mangroves, limestone mogotes, and caves with Taíno art; or whale watching in season, usually January to March. Confirm authorized season dates and sea conditions: whale watching is not guaranteed and you should not swim with whales.
With children, confirm allowed age, properly sized life jackets, shade, boarding, and duration before paying. If they are not comfortable sailing, replace the outing with a coastal walk near your accommodation. El Limón is a waterfall and not the place where whales are seen.
Day 2: a beach near your base
From the Las Galeras area, consider Playa Rincón; from Las Terrenas, Playa Cosón. Do not try to travel both coasts in one morning. These are options for seeing the landscape, not a guarantee of calm seas: check conditions and supervise minors near the water.
Cayo Levantado requires maritime transport and must be expressly stated in your booking; visiting the island does not imply access to the resort. El Limón is a physically demanding alternative: confirm the route and guide, and discard it if the group's mobility does not match.
Safety and regulations
On smaller vessels, verify the use of life jackets and the vessel's safety inspections. It is forbidden to swim with whales, and you must follow the speed and distance limits established by the sanctuary.
Do not disturb nests or corals, and be aware that weather conditions can affect navigation.
Checklist
Verify if the operator has licenses and what the service includes (food, water, equipment). Confirm the cancellation policy due to weather.
Confirm the pick-up point. Do not assume additional coverage; bring cash and sunscreen.
Accessibility and conditions
Samaná has varied terrain. If you have doubts about your physical ability for certain routes, consult with local guides before starting.
For a leisurely pace, take advantage of the beach areas. It is recommended to avoid long-distance travel on the same day to maximize your time.
Planning and sources
Always consult official sources. Planning in advance, especially in high season, helps ensure spots on certified tours.

Organize transport and budget
For a premium private transfer, we recommend PalmHop, with a verified driver and fixed price when booking. Check availability for the exact route before relying on the service; agree separately on the outbound, return, possible stops, and wait times. The transfer does not automatically include a guide, entrance fees, or a boat.
Still need tickets? Contact PalmHop as far in advance as possible: we can offer guidance and help you obtain them through the relevant venue or provider. PalmHop helps with tickets but does not sell them. Availability, booking deadlines and entry requirements depend on each provider; our assistance does not guarantee tickets or admission, and tickets are not included in the transfer.
Compare transport, entrance fees, meals, accommodation if needed, and excursion extras separately. There is public transport in the country, but a direct connection from your hotel is not confirmed here: verify terminals, connections, and the last service with the operator before choosing it.
Before you leave: booking and alternative plan
Confirm in writing the meeting place and time, actual duration, inclusions, cancellation conditions, and the organizer's contact. Carry water, sunscreen, appropriate footwear, and your reservations saved offline. If there are weather alerts or closures, postpone the outing; a place described in a guide does not necessarily have to be open that day.
Keep part of the afternoon free for the return and do not link the excursion to a flight with a tight margin. If you only have one day, choose just one day of the itinerary instead of compressing both.

Frequently asked questions
How do you access Los Haitises?
Access to Los Haitises National Park is primarily by boat from Samaná, allowing you to explore mangroves, keys, and caves with cave paintings. Always confirm service availability.
Can you see whales in Samaná?
Yes, humpback whales visit the bay from January to March. Tours must comply with current approach and safety regulations. Confirm availability with certified operators.
Does a private transfer include the boat tour?
No. A private transfer covers only the land journey. You must verify and contract the availability of nautical services or tours separately.
