Damajagua has a very different landscape from the coast: water runs through rock corridors between vegetation, pools, and small drops. Its appeal does not make this an activity for everyone. Before booking, you must understand how much walking is involved, which sections are aquatic, and what maneuvers the specific trip requires.

The name is not a promise to traverse 27 pools

Tourism officials present Damajagua as a combination of hiking and descending through waterfalls and pools, with local guides and equipment. It also notes that many excursions only cover part of the set. Do not buy an outing thinking the trade name guarantees completing the 27 pools.

The available itinerary depends on conditions and the decisions of those in charge. Ask for the planned section, the total duration, and cancellation conditions if water levels change. From Puerto Plata, it is a regional activity; from Punta Cana, it is not advisable to treat it as a quick walk near the resort.

Guide and equipment: necessary, but not sufficient

Our recommendation requires an authorized guide, properly adjusted helmet and vest, as well as closed-toe shoes with grip and a prior explanation of the route. Do not access on your own or remove equipment because others do. Equipment reduces some risks; it does not make the activity safe in any circumstance.

Confirm with the person in charge the age requirements, physical condition, and ability to handle yourself in the water for the section open that day. We do not publish a universal minimum age: a general rule or commercial offer does not determine the aptitude of each minor. One should not participate under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Questions that deserve a concrete answer

Before paying, explain if you cannot swim, have a fear of heights or water, have an injury, are pregnant, or have any medical condition that may affect the activity. Consult a healthcare professional if you need to assess your aptitude; confirmation of a booking is not equivalent to medical clearance.

  • •Which steps are mandatory and which have a designated alternative?
  • •Can I avoid all jumps and slides, and how is that done on this route?
  • •What happens if I want to quit and where are the exits?
  • •What training does the guide have and what emergency resources are available?
  • •What does insurance cover and which services are actually included?

No need to prove anything to the group

We do not recommend independent jumps nor do we provide instructions on how to execute them. If a step is beyond your comfort level, notify the guide and use only an authorized alternative that has been confirmed. Do not assume all obstacles can be avoided: if there is no exit compatible with your abilities, do not start the route.

For those looking for a quiet landscape visit, it is better to choose another land-based activity whose opening and accessibility have been confirmed. We do not promise a lookout or an alternative walk inside the park without confirming it is open.

Weather can change the plan

Check COE and INDOMET notices and confirm the status with local management. With an alert for rain, high water, or closure, postpone the aquatic activity. Do not rely solely on the sky over the parking lot: rain upstream can alter the river.

Bring a change of clothes, water for after, and only the essentials; leave valuables protected outside the route according to the establishment's instructions. Agree on the return and pickup point. Ground transport does not automatically include entry, a guide, equipment, or adventure insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Damajagua without knowing how to swim?

Do not assume it is suitable. Communicate this before booking and confirm the requirements for the section. A vest does not replace a participant assessment; if in doubt, choose another activity.

Can I avoid all the jumps?

This must be confirmed by the person in charge for the route available that day. We do not guarantee alternatives for every obstacle, nor do we recommend starting without knowing how you might get out.
